Question 1

Are the dots printed or dyed?

Accepted Answer

In a true Madurai Sungudi, the dots are tie-dyed — the fabric is knotted at each point before dyeing, so the dot is the un-dyed base colour. Printed 'Sungudi-style' sarees also exist in the market, so always check the label.

Question 2

Does Sungudi have a GI tag?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Madurai Sungudi received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2005.
